Our Story

In 2001, Chad Carlsen was working for a treatment facility when he expressed the desire to have his own treatment center, in which the focus would be integrity, honesty and excellent client care. They would make the well-being of the client their top priority. With the help of his father, Ernest Carlsen Ph.D. M.D. (who was retired at the time), Chad was able to start "Hope By The Sea, Inc." as a residential treatment center providing an alcohol and drug rehabilitation program.

Chemical Dependency Treatment in Southern CaliforniaThe company was incorporated in California on October 15, 2002. The staff was put into place in the first quarter of 2003 to professionally administer chemical dependency treatment to patients. Kelly Hilton became the Human Resources manager. Hope By The Sea, Inc. opened its first six-bed facility on April 1, 2003. The additional administrative staff followed with Cyndie Dunkerson as personnel manager and Penny Carlsen R.N., Chad's mother, as administrator. Mrs. Carlsen came to us with 30 years experience in running and administrating large medical practices.

The program focused on Dual-Diagnosis. Not only were the 12 steps incorporated into the program, but the psychological issues were also addressed within group and individual counseling sessions by a licensed psychologist. The program has grown to include not only acute treatment such as detoxification and residential treatment, but also out-patient treatment and long-term care with sober living. Our professionally trained and licensed staff supervises all of the programs and services offered by Hope By The Sea.

Currently, Hope By The Sea, Inc. is a 57-bed, full-service facility that provides services from detox to transitional living in a supportive and peaceful environment.

The program is still a family venture. At our drug and alcoholism treatment center, we believe in our patients’ ability to succeed. With the help of our outstanding staff, we support our patients’ growth and recovery.
