September is National Recovery Month, a time to recognize the millions of Americans who are living proof that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people can and do recover.

Mental illness and addiction affect far more people than many realize. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five U.S. adults experiences a mental health issue in a given year. Still, many people avoid or delay the lifesaving treatment they need due to stigma, misunderstanding and lack of awareness.

National Recovery Month, sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, shines a light on the importance of mental and behavioral health and promotes recovery as a reality within reach for anyone willing to seek help.
