Every year, thousands of people lose their lives to drug overdoses, with fentanyl contributing to a growing number of these tragedies. Aug. 31, International Overdose Awareness Day, reminds us of the devastating impact of overdose and the importance of recognizing the warning signs before it is too late.
Fentanyl is one of the most dangerous drugs in circulation today. Many people take it without even knowing because it can resemble substances like oxycodone, heroin or prescription pills. A dose as small as two milligrams can be deadly.
Why Fentanyl Overdose Happens So Quickly
A synthetic opioid, fentanyl is 50 to 100 times stronger than morphine. Like other opioids, it works by binding to brain receptors that control pain and emotion, but it also suppresses critical life functions like breathing, heart rate and body temperature regulation.
An overdose can happen within minutes, possibly leading to brain damage, coma or death without immediate help.
Signs and Symptoms of a Fentanyl Overdose
Because fentanyl is so potent, knowing the signs of overdose can save lives. Symptoms may include:
- Small, constricted pupils
- Obvious respiratory distress or extremely slow, shallow breathing
- Loss of consciousness or unresponsiveness
- Bluish lips or fingernails (signs of oxygen deprivation)
- Cold, clammy skin
- Weak pulse or no pulse
- Gurgling or choking sounds
Any of these warning signs indicate a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately.
How to Reverse an Opioid Overdose
Opioid overdoses are often reversible with naloxone,a lifesaving medication available as a nasal spray or injectable.
- Administer naloxone right away if you suspect an overdose.
- Call emergency services – even if the victim wakes up, fentanyl can remain in their system and continue doing harm.
- Perform rescue breathing or CPR if the person is not breathing or does not have a pulse.
- Move them into the recovery position and stay with them until first responders arrive.
