World Happiness Index
Reading time: 3 min

The World Happiness Index is a global “scoreboard” reflecting how well countries support their citizens’ well-being. This annual report ranks nations based on factors like social programs, income, freedom, trust in government and healthy life expectancy. For many years, the United States held a comfortable place in the top 20. But in 2025, for the first time since the report’s inception, the U.S. dropped to 24th place – its lowest ranking ever.

What’s happened to our collective sense of happiness? And, more importantly, what does this say about mental health, substance abuse and societal well-being in the U.S.?

What Is the World Happiness Index?

Published annually by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the World Happiness Index evaluates happiness across more than 150 countries. It considers objective measures and subjective survey data to determine each nation’s score.

Key variables include:

  • GDP per capita (a measure of economic prosperity)
  • Social support
  • Life expectancy
  • Freedom to make life choices
  • Perceptions of corruption
  • Generosity and community trust

The highest-ranking countries consistently include Finland, Denmark, Iceland and Sweden – nations known for their strong social safety nets, work-life balance and robust health care systems.

Why Did the U.S. Drop in Happiness?

Falling to 24th place signals a concerning trend in American life. While the U.S. remains one of the world’s wealthiest countries, money can’t buy happiness. Many of the top-ranking countries are not economic superpowers – they invest more heavily in mental health care, social trust and quality of life.

Possible reasons for the U.S. drop include:

  • Worsening mental health trends, especially among young people
  • Social isolation, exacerbated by political polarization and online culture
  • Rising cost of living and economic instability
  • Increased substance abuse and overdose deaths
  • Limited access to affordable health care, including mental health services
  • Declining trust in institutions and government

These are not abstract statistics. They reflect genuine suffering, fear and disconnection – which are often precursors to more serious issues like addiction, depression and suicidal ideation.

The Link Between National Happiness and Mental Health

When happiness declines at a national level, it often signifies a widespread mental health crisis. People living in high-stress, unsupported environments are more likely to experience:

In recent years, the U.S. has experienced sharp increases in opioid overdoses, alcohol-related deaths and suicidal behavior, particularly among teens and young adults. These troubling trends don’t occur in a vacuum – they are often symptoms of an overwhelmed, overworked and emotionally underserved society.

What Can We Learn From Happier Countries?

Countries that consistently top the World Happiness Index share specific characteristics:

  • Universal access to mental health care and addiction treatment
  • Emphasis on social connection and community
  • Work-life balance and generous parental leave
  • Robust public health systems
  • Low levels of income inequality

These societies prioritize well-being alongside productivity, recognizing that sustainable happiness requires personal and systemic support.
